If you had a signature beverage, what would it be?

Hands holding cocktails in a toast, with colorful drinks and garnishes. Blurred background and a smiling person create a joyful mood.

Whether it is simply a favorite or if it quietly fits in all the right ways, these beverages are the ones we turn to on the right occasion. More than ever, as Rebecca, Ashley and Jen note, it is quality over quantity and a well-made beverage just hits. Just as with each of us, no two are exactly the same. But, if we were to raise a glass and toast - it would be a very pretty cheers! (Although, not a boomerang anymore or so we're told.) Read on to see a pretty well rounded libations menu.

Not only do I love an espresso martini as a delicious beverage, but it’s a good analogy for my personality. The espresso is strong (like me). The flavor and presentation are fun (like me). And it’s a little aggressive (like me).

I’ve ordered them many times before at restaurants, but only recently started making them myself. I like that they’re easy to make, but feel fancy. And, in my older age, I need a little pick-me-up when I’m staying out past my normal bedtime.

If I’m ordering a drink, it’s going to be a really good cosmo made with quality vodka and done right. It has to be light pink. Not dark. Not red. If it shows up looking like cranberry juice, I’m probably sending it back.

I don’t drink often, so when I do, it has to be worth it. I’m not ordering a cocktail just anywhere it has to be a place where I trust the bar knows what they’re doing. A good cosmo with a lime on the rim (which I always squeeze in to lighten it up even more) is kind of my thing.

I also love a pear martini from my favorite spot, Square Cafe Hingham. It’s incredible! But the last time I had one, I was very aware of it the next day 😅 hungover AF. So now, if I go for it again, I’ll probably stick to half.

That’s the thing for me at this point quality over quantity!!! I’d rather have one really good drink (or even half of one) than something mediocre that leaves me feeling off the next day.

Woman in a red dress sips a drink with mint in a restaurant. She looks content. Red and white plate on the table, soft lighting.

Anyone that I have hosted at my house knows there is a pretty good chance if I am making them a cocktail, it will be a cosmo. It is also my go-to cocktail to order at a restaurant.

I will say, over the last couple years I have really loved cocktails with either gin or elderflower liqueur (or both!). If I am at a restaurant and they are advertising a cocktail with these ingredients, I am most likely trying it.

A couple years ago I got into the craft of making cocktails. It was fun building a stocked bar and playing with drink ingredients. Although I am not doing that anymore, I always get excited for Christmas drinks and trying new ones. Ali and I have a Christmas cocktail/book pairing series we do around the holidays which is always so fun.

Honestly, these days life is too busy to try new drinks and I am instead enjoying my cup of tea every night. BUT in another life; I am sipping cosmos on the patio with my husband while listening to soulful music like Otis Redding and Etta James.

A Paper Plane is my absolute favorite cocktail. There’s just something about a really great signature drink, it elevates everything for me. I wasn’t always into cocktails, but over the past few years I’ve really come to appreciate a well-crafted one. Lately, I’ve even had fun getting creative and making signature cocktails for gatherings, which has been such a joy.

Classic Paper Plane Recipe

* ¾ oz Aperol

* ¾ oz Amaro Nonino Quintessentia

Behind these red doors is a whole lot of fun!

A signature beverage - how fun! Ok, I have a few, but I'll share two. The first one requires a little back story - I'll try to keep it brief. My husband and I met while we were studying abroad in Spain - Sevilla to be exact. We used to go to this charming flamenco bar that was tucked away down a tiny street. There was no sign - you just looked for the red door. Well, they had the most magical back area with an awning of lights and served "Agua de Sevilla" by the pitcher. When Adam's family came to visit, he took them to this favorite spot and they asked for the recipe of this drink. And, they shared it!! So, fast forward 7 years and we served it at our wedding - this drink always has a soft spot in my heart.

Handwritten recipe on yellow paper for "Agua de Sevilla" with ingredients: pineapple, champagne, whiskey, cognac, vanilla ice cream.

Ok, the second beverage is more straightforward and I actually drink it with regularity. A club soda, splash of cranberry and a lime. This is usually what I order when I'm out and want a festive drink. Never fail someone asks what I'm drinking and I respond, "basically water with accoutrements." Which is usually followed with them trying the same!

A glass of orange cocktail with ice and a lemon wedge on a wooden table, cityscape in the blurred background, under a pinkish sky.

My signature drink is an Old Fashioned, and the more I think about it, the more it fits. It’s a little sweet, high quality, and classic, but also intentional. Nothing flashy or overdone. Just a few simple ingredients that only work if they’re done well.

There’s also a quiet confidence to it.

You order it because you know what you like, not because anyone’s watching. It leans toward depth over noise, quality over quantity. And like any good Old Fashioned, it needs a bit of edge to keep it balanced.
