How do you Prefer to Celebrate Mother's Day?

Updated: May 1, 2025

Mother's Day is a special day of the year when we celebrate caregivers of all kinds. To love a kiddo, grandchild, niece, nephew or a furry friend is to see a bit of your heart smile back at you. And, when the day comes to celebrate all the selfless ways we show love (yes, that includes coordinating endless carpools or folding unending laundry), there are a myriad of ways to pause and honor all the little ways we love.

We'll say it - there is a RIGHT way to celebrate Mother's Day. The right way is however YOU want to! For every unique way each caregiver is different, there is a different way to celebrate.  We asked our Spilling Goodness moms - hear their favorite plans below:

I love spending Mother's Day at the ballpark. Sometimes, my son has a baseball game scheduled, but if not, we'll catch a minor or major league game. I look forward to that hot dog, beer, and the chance to catch a flyball!

My mom lives in Michigan, and my mother-in-law is no longer with us, so Mother’s Day activities are designed for me. I struggled for years to find a balance between “me time” and time with my kids.

Last year, I did something different, and it was perfect. I knew I wanted to see a baseball game, but one of my kids loves live sports and the other is much more interested in playing sports, not watching them. I thought about what would bring me joy on Mother’s Day, and honestly, it’s when my whole family is living their best lives. When I see my kiddos thriving and enjoying what they love. So, I made a decision.

My younger son and I went to a baseball game, while my husband and older son played a round of golf. My husband thought it would be weird to “split up,” but I knew that everyone would have a great day. We came back together for dinner, told stories about our day, played a little trivia (a family favorite), all the while, I soaked in their smiles and laughter and relished in the notion that I have great kids and I’m so lucky to be their mom.

Mother’s Day is my permission slip to slow down. I love starting the day by sleeping in and waking up to a hot cup of coffee and a plate of pancakes smothered in peanut butter, syrup, and maybe some chocolate chips…the more indulgent, the better. The kids are usually lounging around, and we enjoy a slow, easy morning with no rushing or schedules.

Then I head to a hot yoga class…just me, my mat, and a moment to breathe. Afterward, we take a family walk and grab lunch together. I don’t think about dishes, laundry, or any to-dos. My husband takes the kids to the park, and I meet up with my mom and sister to read on the beach…one of my favorite simple joys.

Later, my husband grills dinner for us all…no separate kid meals, no chaos. We sit down together, and I end the day with some ice cream and either a Bravo show or whatever book I’m currently lost in.

It’s the kind of day that feels restful, joyful, and just for me…exactly what motherhood should include more of.

I love spending Mother's Day with my family. I always request the morning to sleep in followed by enjoying my cup of coffee in the quiet with my current read. The kids love to surprise me with their homemade crafts and I love seeing the joy on their faces when they give me something they feel so proud to gift. The rest of the day I absolutely love to be outside with my husband and 3 kids. We enjoy hikes, a game of catch, finding bugs, and of course, reading! Dinner always includes a pasta dish made by my hubby.

Mother's Day is such a blessing. I am honored that I get to celebrate as a mother, daughter, and woman. I am grateful for all the amazing women in my life that I get to be surrounded by everday whether they are near or far.

I find so much joy in spending Mother’s Day with my sister and my mom. With my sister and her family, along with my parents, living out of state, it is such a gift to spend the day with them. They travel to us this day, where we head to church and then brunch. Brunch is usually a dressy event and I LOVE pulling the “it’s Mother’s Day” card on my two boys, forcing them to wear their nice clothes. Of course they always look so handsome, which excites me to take some nice family pictures of us! Afterwards, everyone comes back to our house for the afternoon, where the cousins play and the adults spend time together.

However, this year will look different. It will be the same group, but instead of them traveling to see us, we are all traveling to Minneapolis to see my grandparents. With my grandmother’s health declining, we want to spend this special day with her. Although the day will evoke emotions happy and sad, spending this day with her will stand out as a gift for myself and my children.

Each Mother’s Day is a true blessing to cherish. This year will mark a new memory for me on this day that I will always hold dear to my heart.

Just like most Sundays, I love to start the day with a run - music on shuffle and my mind running as freely as my legs. After my solo time, the perfect day is full of playing outside together with a bike ride to grab ice cream. Then, my husband cooks an amazing dinner and my parents join us to celebrate the woman who I look up to most - my mom!

I also love taking a minute to appreciate all the care givers in my life. My "Mom Village" is so strong and we carry each other from time to time. That support and camaraderie makes a world of difference - when you genuinely enjoy the moms you spends countless hours on the soccer sidelines with, it adds another reason to look forward to a game. When your tribe can work a carpool routine into a well oiled, spreadsheeted machine - that is magical. Usually those notes of appreciation are in texts and even that simple nod to each other is a reminder that even though "moming" can be hard, it is easier with a village.

Being outdoors with my family. My perfect morning includes coffee, kids and the dog at nearby Great Falls Park.

Then, I get an hour, uninterrupted 1:1 time with each kid- and we can do whatever they want- play football in the backyard, listen to music and chat or build legos.

To end the night, we swim in the pool. The best thing is that in the pool, there are no electronics, no distractions, no chores to be done and we are just all outside together.
